Hawthorne at Work

I'm writing copy for work, and I have an idea of where I want to go with it style-wise so I Google Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery." If you haven't read it, you must. Great short story. Anyhow, I come across photos of other masters of the short story, and there is a photo of Nathaniel Hawthorne.

I'm a fan of Hawthorne. People have noted his influence in my short stories, and I'm flattered. But I didn't picture him like this. He's so intensely ghostly. I think it is the big white forehead. I mean no disrespect. And if you've never read Young Goodman Brown, you should.

I agree with your recommendation on "The Lottery". A fine story.

Uh, I guess I don't get it. The writing was okay, but a story about stoning people for the sake of, "That's what we have always done." seems to be pointless and quite horrible.

Maybe I just like my stories a little happier. There is enough misery and sadness in the world, why read more in free time.
