Thanksgiving is often a learning experience for my family from burning ovens to blind dates. But this year I learned a lot of new things about Thanksgiving from Bella.
It all started with construction paper feather headdresses. We all had one handmade by Bella, and we were each given a new Indian name. Then we had to defend ourselves from random attacks by ferocious squirrels, but thankfully Indians are experts at Kung Fu - according to Bella. And yes, we were Indians not Native Americans.
We wore our construction paper headdresses while we cooked and ate. I asked Bella, "If we are all Indians, where are the pilgrims?" She said, "Let's pretend the Village People aren't here." Easily managed. Although I then heard echoes of "YMCA" the rest of the day, at least when "Everybody was Kung Fu fighting" wasn't playing in my head. I wondered if a disco ball would be found in the oven with the Turkey.
I asked my little squaw, "Do you know what Thanksgiving is?" She replied, "Yes, it's when we invented the 4th of July."
